RESPONSES OF SOCIETY.
Sunday, April 11, 2010 @ 3:23 AM

Floods always cause a response from the society. Some of these responses are:
News; Society, the community, and victims will watch out on the news for any help. If told to evacuate, they will. State officials and locals will give directions on what to do and what not to do.
Disaster plan; Normally, each family has a disaster plan, which is a plan of what to do in case a disaster takes place. Victims will do what is in the plan, and members of the community will try their best to help them complete this as fast as possible.
Kit; A kit which includes non-perishable food, bottled water, a radio, and a flashlight with extra batteries, is reccommended by disaster officials. In case of any disaster, not just floods, victims should take this kit with them.
Organisations; Normally, humanisation organisations come to the rescue. Victims or witnessers notify the police or these help groups, and they come as fast as they can to the rescue. As well as this, many organisations raise as much money as they can, to help victims recover, and to reduce costs for the damage caused.
Fear and trauma; Victims, and witnesses, of the event will be afraid, because they never know when it could happen again, and also are unknown of the dangers next time.
Empathy; Members of society will empathise with victims, and will try their best to help them recover. They will give victims hope, and this makes the victims feel stronger.
Floods cause responses from society.
IMPACTS OF THE NATURAL HAZARD ON THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMY, AND PEOPLE.
@ 3:23 AM

Floods create a heavy impact on the environment, the economy, and people.Impact on the environment:Floods destroy drainage systems, and destroyed drainage systems can only mean to one thing; raw waste material and sewerage coming out onto the streets, thus leading to putrid smells. Depending on the severity of the flood, buildings will become damaged, and sometimes, even destroyed. When buildings are damaged or destroyed, many toxic and poisonous substances such as paint, gasoline, and pesticide can be released into many bodies of water, such as lakes, seas, and oceans. This leads to killing of marine animals/ plants. Floods often cause erosion to coasts. Although, floods don't always have a negative impact. When the flood carries sediment and water over large tracts of agrictultural land, they are distributed, and this replenishes the topsoil, resulting in higher land mass above sea level. Impact on the economy: Floods cause a heavy blow on the economy. The cost to repair damage done by a flood depends on how severe it was. Most of the time, it takes a millions of dollars to repair damage done to a city, such as wrecked buildings, traffic lights, houses, shops, play equipment in a park, street poles, and other construction. Impact on people:When floods damage a city, this refrains from people going to work or school. In cases of severe floods, when homes are destroyed, people become homeless, and have to wait for people to rescue them out, and might have to go and start life somewhere new. That isn't always the case though. Floods have a negative impact on the envvironment, the economy, and the people.
MAPS DESCRIBING AREAS IN AUSTRALIA MOST SERIOUSLY AFFECTED.
@ 3:22 AM

In Australia, floods occur. Here are a couple of maps showing where. Note that there are floods in Western Australia. This is because of the heavy rain often associated with monsoons, which come from the Indian Ocean, which is next to Western Australia.
Picture above: Bushfires and floods in 2009.
The map above shows run off water in Australia. In the picture above, floods shown are from 1985 to 2006.
Floods are most commonly occur in coastal areas, because of overflow of water from the ocean. They are also popular on the coast of Western Australia, because of the heavy rainfall often associated with Monsoon winds. The rest of the floods ccur either because of heavy rainfall, weak soil, or broken levees.
GEOGRAPHICAL PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS NATURAL DISASTER.
@ 3:22 AM
There are many geographical processes associated with floods.
Soil: Different types of soil have different capacities of retaining rainwater, some can't hold it. When the soil type is not strong enough to hold rain water, flooding will commence.
Monsoon: A monsoon is a series of strong winds from in the direction of the Indian Ocean, and is characterised by heavy rainfall. When the amount of heavy rainfall reaches a certain rainfall, (that is, heaps of rain falls,) floods could begin.
Levee: A levee is a bank to prevent flooding. When rivers break through their levees, floods will ensue.
Waterlogging: When the land becomes saturated with water, eventually floods will form.
